I was just going insane because I couldn't get any sound to come through my headphones after a recent upgrade to Hardy. I scoured Google, Ubuntu Forums, and even Linux Questions to find an answer. I was about to give up and make a post on here questioning whether or not anyone heard of such an issue when it hit me.

I had the 3.5mm extension plugged in, but not the headphones.

Obama vs. McCain - Abortion and Women's Issues [Jul. 3rd, 2008|10:15 pm]

obama_2008

[gothicaleiav]
This post is really just sparked from the previous post about [info]tri_blog's interaction with the Clinton communities. I really want to put out there Obama's record on Women's Issues and Abortion vs. McCain's.

All of these statistics are collected from Project Vote Smart. It's a party free voter watchdog and you can learn about it here.

Obama's Abortion Endorsements )

McCain's Abortion Endorsements )

Obama's Women's Issues Endorsements )

McCain's Women's Issues Endorsements )

Now, we're going to look at voting records. One thing we need to remember is that "unlike the US Congress or many other state legislatures, Illinois is one of the few that requires a constitutional majority for a measure to pass. This means 51% of all members - not just all voting that day - must vote Yes for something to pass. Voting present in IL legislature is the same as voting no." Thanks [info]birdseyeview for explaining it. :)

Obama's Voting Record )

McCain's Voting Record )

These issues are among the most important to me when voting and they have all sorts of issues on the Project Vote smart Web site where you can look up candidate's endorsements and their voting record and I encourage you guys to do that. You can even look up their exact position on the political courage test. I just wanted to put this out there with regards to these two issues. We face a VERY important election in terms of pro-choice rights. We really need to keep in mind the voting records and endorsements of these candidates when we think about who to support.

food for travelling/road trip [Jul. 3rd, 2008|10:06 pm]

My friend is moving from Georgia to Washington state, taking a road trip that will last about a week and a half. He will be doing a lot of camping along the way. I want to make him some food to bring, preferrably something that can be cooked over a fire and can be kept unrefrigerated in a jar or plastic baggie. He doesn't eat any processed food, so I definitely don't want to get him Clif bars, Primal Strips, or anything like that. Ideas, please?

Presidents - History Channel [Jul. 3rd, 2008|09:30 pm]

Just watching the series on now... I'm a little behind, but I think they are in the middle of the one that starts with John Q Adams. I've seen this before, but I am watching it through the eyes of someone going through what feels like an historic election, and reading all the decisive rhetoric and watching it on the news (although I have been avoiding it lately) and it is interesting how much and how LITTLE has changed.

It seems that every election they talk about how "dirty" politics has gotten, and quite frankly, for all the divisiveness there is in this country, it is amazine how "civil" we really are relatively... the only thing that has really changed is the medium's in which people get their information, and we are able to fact check instantaneously compared to the "good old days"

Just thought I would throw it out there for anyone looking for some interesting and educational tv :)

The Revolutionary iHam [Jul. 3rd, 2008|08:02 pm]
boingboing_net

From the PR/Marketing firm Shackleton in Spain, a super funny riff on Apple products (which has been circulating in the Spanish blogosphere for months). The introductory video will make you burp bacon, it's so funny. Lulz deconstruction, for non-Spanish readers: the "j" would sound like "h" in Spanish if you said the word "iJam." Anyway, somehow the guy's Castellano accent makes it even funnier, because the "th" sounds are all so fancy to my mexican-spanish-trained ear.

iHam 5Js.

Below: More recently, some guys tried to return their iHam at the Apple store, and were rebuffed. Wikreate's response to Shackleton's iJam.

Campaign trail a gray area for Obama [Jul. 3rd, 2008|05:15 pm]

obama_2008

[bispo]

The realization almost always prompts a double take, a moment of inspection, maybe even a debate: Is baby-faced Barack Obama, the symbol of a younger political generation, actually aging in front of us?

By his own admission this week, “the gray is coming quick,” so that it now dusts his head like snowflakes. The laugh lines cut a little deeper, and the crow's-feet around his eyes appear slightly more pronounced.

The presidency ages presidents, but so, it seems, has the longest campaign in modern history aged a candidate.

“By the time I’m sworn in, I will look the part,” Obama acknowledged to donors Wednesday in Colorado Springs, Colo., one month before his 47th birthday.

2 sentence help? [Jul. 3rd, 2008|07:27 pm]

japanese

[steveyshock]
Can anyone help with the following? I'm doing some press release work for a film, but I'm having trouble with the bolded sentence.

===

Izumi is an office lady who lives with her boyfriend, Hiromi. Hiromi has an illness that prevents him from finding a job. One day, Izumi's company undergoes a restructuring. Without telling Hiromi, Izumi begins to hunt for a new job, with little success. Without knowing the troubles placed on Izumi, Hiromi says that he wants to eat a high grade type of melon. For Hiromi's sake, Izumi runs about trying to procure this melon. [insert untranslated sentence]This is the sweet love story of a brave Izumi and the kind Hiromi.
===

I think it's something along the lines of... Hiromi is feigning his illness because it got better, and should work, but doesn't... and in the end his illness gets worse and makes him collapse? Is that right? It seems weird to me.

Well... this entire movie seems weird to me. Melons? :/

From Chapter One:

"After the project was completed, the foreman was so happy with the boys work that he kept them on, and now, two years later, they were working full time and earning enough money to keep them happy. Lisa was happy for her brother. But she knew that he had always been happier when his true best friend, Nelson Muntz, was around. Nelson was Bart and Milhouse's age, two years older than Lisa. He had gone to highschool with Bart and Milhouse up until their junior year, when Nelson dropped out, had a major falling out with Bart and then left town. Lisa knew her brother missed him, it was common sense. Sure he had been a bully and a bit of an asshole back in grade school, but as he grew up and had his friends by his side, he did just that, he grew up."

Automatix? [Jul. 3rd, 2008|03:02 pm]

linux

[sinistertim101]
I left Ubuntu about a year and used automatix for clear type fonts, mp3 support, java2sdk, and other nifty utilities including the ability to use ctrl + alt + del to launch gtop.

My AMD notebook is finally somewhat supported so I gave 8.04 a shot. This is painful to search for each codec and I noticed that ubuntu 8.04 defaults to opensource community repositories which are unstable and hosed my system much to my irration.

Anyway is Automatix gone now? What else can I use to find these great programs all located in a single place?

Homer: Son, if there's one thing this life has taught me, it's to avoid trouble just say nothing. Don't rock the boat. Don't even get in the boat! Just buy some ice cream and walk around the pier. But don't go in the bathrooms; they're filthy!

Bart: But I have to say something.

Homer: Talk about boats. Then when they ask you if you hate this country, you just cry and pretend you don't.

Is anyone here doing the Obama Fellows program? It's my understanding that most fellows are already trained and working, but the Indiana program doesn't start for another week or so. I'm curious about what you've experienced in training and on the ground. Thanks!

Dave Hill, inventor of the world's greatest two-man percussive dance theatre troupe [Jul. 3rd, 2008|04:13 pm]
boingboing_net

Internet funnyman Dave Hill tells Boing Boing:

Recently my friends David Rakoff, Martha Plimpton, Chris Schneider, Miles Kahn, and I made this video chronicling mine and David's attempts at forming the world's greatest two-man percussive dance theatre troupe, like, ever. Please watch it now and then make everyone you know watch it and then have those people make everyone they know watch it, sort of like that shampoo commercial or something. Anyway, I hope you enjoy this video so much. It pretty much has everything. You can totally watch it right here.
